An outstanding Receptionist

Updated: Oct 24

Most of us have experienced interactions with Receptionists, perhaps in a bank, hospital, clinic, hotel, restaurant, salon, spa, governmental institution, etc.

The experiences must have been, without a doubt, most varied. We could have been left feeling especial, insecure, threatened, or been completely immune emotionally.

We must acknowledge the power of receptionists to alter your emotional status, this could be used accordingly depending on the type of business or organisation.

Environments where the receptionists are based can support or hinder the interactions with them. Areas could be cold, warm, dark, intimidating, crowded, solitary, quiet, relaxing, soulless, uninspiring, etc.

One of the skills of a receptionist is to make all the negative external factors disappear from the mind and body of the person/s interacting with them. A good receptionist will make the most of the positive surroundings to enhance the overall interactive experience.

Main characteristics of an outstanding receptionist:

Humble: doesn't take individual credit for achievements, there is always more than one person involved in a service delivery.

Genuine: tells the true even when it hurst but does everything possible to rectify the situation. Doesn't exaggerate positive contributions to stand out. Doesn't criticise but suggest, teach.

Caring: willing to genuinely listen to customers and colleagues, deliver on promises of assistance, help to others.

Strong sense of responsibility: is well disciplined to do the very best at all times even when the motivation has temporarily deserted them. This person is punctual, well presented, well mannered and takes ownership instead of shifting blame.

Witty: knows when to stay quiet and when to speak out, knows how to anticipate customer needs, is well informed and confident with the working tools.

Flexible: can cover other positions, duties, shifts. Adapts well to changes or processes and personnel.

Creative thinker: sees beyond the core duties and responsibilities, contribute with ideas to add value to the service delivery or products.
